Show and Tell: Conundrum

February 8, 2009

This week, I faced a conundrum. DH and I went out of town, and we crashed at someone’s apartment. I actually barely know this person, but DH knows him better — he’s a friend-of-a-friend.

I was raised to always bring a gift when you go to someone’s home, especially if you are staying over. But, this guy is infamous for refusing all gifts. He doesn’t even accept birthday gifts from relatives. He also has many qualities that make him impossible to shop for, even if he were to accept a gift. He has more money than he can possibly use; he only eats healthy foods; and he has virtually no free time because of his preposterous work schedule. And, as a single man, obvious “hostess” gifts like fragrant soaps, candles, or flowers are not appropriate. This led to the frustrating but intriguing challenge of coming up with a thanks-for-letting-us-sleep-on-your-pullout-sofa gift that he wouldn’t refuse.

Finally, it dawned on me. Something very small, calorie-free, handy for entertaining, with a long shelf-life. To make it more impressive, I happen to have brought it back from my trip to Asia last fall. Depicted below, against the backdrop of the view from this guy’s window.

While I’m at it, here’s the same view by sunset, without the tea.

And in case you can’t make her out in the other photos, a close-up of our host’s special lady.

Later this week I’ll tell you why I made the trip.

Other things to consume, scenery to enjoy, and much more at Show and Tell.
